Erythropoiesis is a red blood cell (erythrocyte) production. Your bone marrow makes most of your red blood cells. Once they’re fully mature, they are released into your bloodstream, where they transport oxygen throughout your body.

Difficulties with erythropoiesis can result in anaemia, where you don't have enough red blood cells.

Erythropoiesis (pronounced “ur-i-throw-poy-EE-sus”) is your body’s process of making red blood cells (erythrocytes). It ensures you have the right number of blood cells — not too few or too many.

Red blood cells are important because they:

  • transport oxygen through your lungs to tissues
  • transport carbon dioxide from tissues to your lungs to breathe it out

Erythropoiesis is one type of hematopoiesis. Hematopoiesis is your body’s process of making all three types of blood cells: red blood cells (erythropoiesis), white blood cells (leukopoiesis) and platelets (thrombopoiesis).

It occurs before people are born and is known as fetal erythropoiesis. By the time people are born, erythropoiesis takes place in people’s bone marrow. Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside of your bones. In adults, erythropoiesis occurs in certain bones, including your pelvis, vertebrae, ribs and breastbone.

Cause of Erythropoiesis

The body’s sensitivity to oxygen levels regulates erythropoiesis. If the tissues don’t have enough oxygen (hypoxia), the body will ramp up red blood cell production. More red blood cells mean there’s more oxygen flowing to the tissues and cells. A hormone called erythropoietin triggers erythropoiesis.

Impact of Royal Jelly on Erythropoiesis
Royal Jelly is a unique form of honey bee secretion that has been shown to have a positive effect on erythropoiesis, or the production of red blood cells. In recent years, research has uncovered potential benefits for humans who consume Royal Jelly supplements and the findings have been promising. Many studies have confirmed the ability of Royal Jelly to stimulate the production of red blood cells in the body, which is essential for healthy functioning. Additionally, it has been found that Royal Jelly may help protect against anaemia and reduce inflammation in some cases.

While more research needs to be done to fully understand its effects on erythropoiesis, it is clear that Royal Jelly has great potential as a supplement for those looking to improve their health and overall well-being.
